Why should we protect our oceans?

This week, we've learned that our oceans help us breathe and are home to millions of amazing sea creatures. But today, our oceans need our help. Every year, millions of tonnes of rubbish, especially plastic, end up in the sea. Plastic bags, bottles, fishing nets and other litter can float in the ocean for many years, harming animals and polluting their homes.

Plastic can be dangerous. Many sea animals mistake plastic for food. A sea turtle might think a floating plastic bag is a jellyfish, while seabirds and fish can accidentally swallow tiny pieces of plastic. Some animals also become trapped in old fishing nets or discarded ropes, making it difficult for them to swim, eat or escape from danger.

Coral reefs need our help too. Coral reefs are often called the "rainforests of the sea" because they provide food and shelter for thousands of different marine animals. However, pollution, warming oceans and careless human activities can damage these beautiful underwater habitats. When we protect the oceans, we are also protecting the homes of countless sea creatures.

Small actions make a big difference. You don't have to be a scientist or a diver to help the ocean. Every child can make a difference! Throw rubbish into the correct bin. Recycle paper, plastic and cans whenever possible. Bring a reusable water bottle instead of buying single-use plastic bottles. Use reusable shopping bags with your family. If you visit the beach, leave it cleaner than you found it by picking up any litter safely with an adult.

Did you know? More than 3 billion people around the world depend on the ocean for food and their livelihoods. Healthy oceans help produce much of the oxygen we breathe. Even if you live far from the sea, rubbish can travel through drains and rivers before reaching the ocean. Every small action adds up when millions of people work together.
