Why do so many amazing creatures live in the ocean?

The previous article we discovered that our oceans cover about 71% of Earth. Today, let's dive beneath the waves to meet some of the incredible animals that call the ocean home! Scientists have already discovered more than 240,000 different marine species, and they believe millions more may still be waiting to be found in the deep sea.

🐋 The Blue Whale – The Gentle Giant The blue whale is the largest animal ever known to have lived on Earth. An adult can grow to about 30 metres long and weigh as much as 180 tonnes—heavier than 25 African elephants! Even though it is so enormous, the blue whale mainly eats tiny shrimp-like animals called krill.

🐙 The Giant Pacific Octopus – The Clever Escape Artist The giant Pacific octopus has eight powerful arms covered with hundreds of suction cups. It is one of the smartest animals in the ocean and can open jars, solve simple puzzles, squeeze through tiny gaps, and even change colour to hide from predators.

🌿 The Leafy Sea Dragon – The Underwater Master of Disguise The leafy sea dragon looks almost exactly like floating seaweed! Its leafy body helps it hide from hungry predators while it slowly drifts through underwater seaweed forests. Even more amazing, it is the father that carries the eggs until they hatch.

🛸 The Manta Ray – The Ocean's Flying Giant The manta ray seems to fly through the sea using its huge wing-like fins. Some manta rays can have a wingspan of up to 7 metres, making them one of the largest rays in the world. They are gentle animals that feed on tiny plankton.

🤩 Ocean Creature Fun Facts! 🦈 Some sharks have been swimming in Earth's oceans longer than dinosaurs existed! 🐠 Clownfish live safely among the stinging tentacles of sea anemones. 🐢 Sea turtles can travel thousands of kilometres across the ocean before returning to the same beach where they were born to lay their eggs. 🌊 Scientists discover hundreds of new marine species almost every year.
