Why Do People Around the World Eat Different Food?
Why does food taste so different in different parts of the world?
That’s because food grows from the place people live in. In some countries, the weather is cold. People eat warm, heavy food like soups and bread to stay warm. In hotter places, people enjoy lighter meals like rice, vegetables, and fresh dishes that help them feel cool. But food is not just about weather. Imagine travelling to another country. The buildings may look different, the language may sound different… and the food can be completely new too.

It is also about culture, history, and the people who live there. Long ago, people cooked with what they could find nearby — fish from the sea, vegetables from farms, and spices from plants. Over time, these became the special dishes of each country. That’s why every country has its own unique taste. Some places are even known as food paradises — where people travel from all over the world just to eat.
In Japan, many people love to eat sashimi. Sashimi is thin slices of very fresh raw fish, like salmon or tuna. It is not cooked, so the fish must be extremely fresh and prepared very carefully. People enjoy it for its clean, natural taste.

In Italy, food is all about comfort and sharing. Families gather to eat pizza, pasta, and sweet gelato together. The recipes are often passed down from grandparents to parents to children. In France, people are famous for their baking. Fresh bread, buttery croissants, and beautiful pastries fill the bakeries every morning.

In Singapore, we are known as a gourmet city. That means there is a huge variety of delicious food everywhere! You can find famous dishes like chicken rice and satay, as well as all kinds of Chinese, Indian, and Malay food. This is because Singapore is a multiracial and multicultural country, where people from different backgrounds live together and share their food traditions.

People don’t just travel to these places to see buildings. Many travel because they want to taste the food. Food can be exciting, surprising, and even unforgettable. When tourists visit a country for its food, it helps many people — from chefs to hawker stall owners to farmers. Food can help a country grow and become well-known around the world.
Fun fact: Some people plan their whole holiday just to try certain foods — like flying to Japan just for sushi or visiting Singapore just to eat at hawker centres! Fun fact: Singapore has some hawker stalls that even received Michelin stars, which means they are among the best food places in the world.
So food is not just something we eat — it is a way to explore the world. And sometimes, when you try a new dish, it feels like you are travelling… without even leaving your seat.
Thinking moment: Why do you think food can be powerful enough to make people travel across the world?
