Why Do We Need Different Kinds of Food?
Why can’t we just eat our favourite food every single day?
Imagine eating only fried chicken, or only ice cream, every day. At first, it feels amazing. But after a while, your body starts to feel tired, slow, and even a little sick. That’s because your body is like a machine — and it needs different types of fuel to work properly.
Food is not just about taste. It is actually science happening inside your body every day. When you eat, your body doesn’t just keep the food as it is. It breaks the food down into tiny pieces so your body can use it. Your mouth starts by chewing. Then your stomach and body juices (called enzymes) help to break food down even more.

Carbohydrates, like rice, bread, and noodles, are broken down into sugar (called glucose). This sugar travels in your blood and gives you energy to run, jump, think, and play. That’s why if you don’t eat enough carbohydrates, you may feel weak or tired.
Proteins, like chicken, fish, eggs, tofu, and beans, are broken down into tiny parts called amino acids. These are like little building blocks. Your body uses them to build muscles, repair your body, and help you grow taller and stronger.

Then there are vitamins from fruits and vegetables. These don’t give energy like carbs, but they act like helpers. They keep your body working smoothly, help you fight sickness, and keep your eyes, skin, and body healthy.
Fats are also important — but only in small amounts. Fats give extra energy and help protect your organs. But what happens if we eat too much fat, especially unhealthy fats like oily, fried, or very processed food? When too much fat builds up inside your body, it can start to stick to your blood vessels — the tiny “roads” that carry blood around your body. Over time, these roads can become narrow and blocked. Your heart has to work much harder to push blood through these narrow paths. If it becomes too difficult, it can lead to serious heart problems when you grow older. So fats are not bad — but too much of them can make your heart’s job very hard.

That’s why a good meal is like a team: Carbohydrates give you energy, proteins build your body, vitamins protect you, and fats help in small ways. When you eat a balanced meal, your body becomes strong, fast, and healthy — ready to learn, play, and grow every day.
Thinking moment: Why do you think eating too much of just one type of food can cause problems for your body?
