Why Is Recycling Important If Singapore Already Burns Our Trash?
Singapore is known for being clean. There are no big piles of rubbish on the streets. So here is a big why! If Singapore already burns most of its trash safely, why do we still need to recycle?

🌎 World Change
Singapore has special factories that burn our rubbish. When the rubbish is burned, it becomes much smaller and can even help to produce electricity for homes. That sounds very smart, and it is. But after the burning, there is still leftover ash. This ash has to be sent somewhere.
It is sent to a place called Semakau Landfill. A landfill is a large area of land where rubbish and ash are buried safely so they do not harm people. Semakau is an island located about 8 kilometres south of mainland Singapore. It is far away from the city and can only be reached by boat. The island was specially created to store Singapore’s waste in a controlled and safe way. However, the island is not endless. If we keep producing too much waste, Semakau could be full around 2035.

🔍 Cause and Effect When we recycle: • Fewer natural resources are taken from Earth • Less energy is used to make new products • Less waste is burned • Less landfill space is used

🏠 People and Life Recycling also creates jobs. People collect, sort, and process materials. It helps companies design better packaging. It teaches children that small habits matter. When someone throws a can into the blue bin instead of the normal bin, that small action joins millions of other small actions. That is how change happens.
🌱 Our Choices Recycling works best when we: • Rinse containers • Separate paper, plastic, and metal properly • Do not mix food waste into recycling Clean recycling means it can actually be reused. Dirty recycling often gets thrown away instead.

🤔 Thinking Moment If every child in Singapore recycled one more item a day, how much waste would we reduce in one year?
