Why Can’t We Just Burn All Our Plastic?
This week, we are talking about something we see every single day — plastic. Plastic is a material made by people from chemicals that can be shaped into many different things like bottles, toys, and food wrappers. Look around you right now. A water bottle. A snack wrapper. A toy. A toothbrush. Plastic is everywhere. So here is the big why!

Why can’t we just burn all the plastic and make it disappear?
🌎 World Change Every year, the world produces more than 400 million tonnes of plastic. That is heavier than thousands of cruise ships combined. And much of it is used only once. When we throw plastic away, it does not rot like food. It does not break down like paper. It can stay on Earth for hundreds of years.

🔥 Cause and Effect
Some people think burning plastic sounds like a fast solution. Fire makes things disappear, right? But when plastic burns, it releases harmful gases. These gases can pollute the air and make people sick. Some plastics release toxic chemicals that are dangerous to breathe in. Even in countries with high-tech incinerators, burning plastic still produces carbon dioxide. That adds to global warming. So burning does not make plastic harmless. It just changes the problem into air pollution .Air pollution happens when the air becomes dirty because of smoke, harmful gases, or tiny dust that can make it harder for people and animals to breathe.

🏠 People and Life
When plastic waste is not recycled properly, it can end up in rivers and oceans. Sea turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish. Birds eat tiny plastic pieces thinking they are food. In cities like Singapore, waste is burned in special plants. The ash is then sent to Semakau Landfill. But even landfills have limited space. If we keep using more plastic, where will we put it all?

🌱 Our Choices We have three powerful choices: Reduce Reuse Recycle
Reduce means using less plastic in the first place. Reuse means using the same bottle or container again. Recycle means turning old plastic into new products. Each choice slows down the problem.
🤔 Thinking Moment Next time you throw something away, ask yourself: Can this have another life?
