Why Can a Rambutan Seed Be Dangerous?
A very sad accident recently happened in Malaysia. A 5-year-old boy choked after swallowing a rambutan seed, and doctors were unable to save him which resulted in his death. Rambutan is a sweet, spiky fruit that many families enjoy, but this incident reminds us that some foods can be risky for young children.
🌰 What is a rambutan? Rambutan is a tropical fruit with soft white flesh inside. At the centre of the fruit is a large, smooth seed. While adults often know to spit the seed out, young children may accidentally swallow it.
⚠️ Why are seeds risky for kids? Small children are still learning how to chew and swallow properly. Hard or slippery foods—like fruit seeds, nuts, or grapes—can: 1. Get stuck in the throat 2. Block the airway 3. Make it hard to breathe Because kids’ airways are much smaller, choking can happen very quickly.

👨‍👩‍👧 What can adults do? Adults can help keep children safe by: Removing seeds before giving fruit to young kids Cutting food into small, soft pieces Watching children while they eat Teaching kids to eat slowly and sit still during meals
🌍 Why this matters Many choking accidents happen during everyday moments like snack time. Knowing which foods are risky helps families make safer choices—without needing to stop enjoying favourite fruits altogether.

❓ A WhyPals WHY Why should we be extra careful with small foods around young children? Because kids’ bodies are still growing, and a small object can cause a big danger—so a little care can help keep them safe. 💛
