Biggest Fire in Hong Kong
On the afternoon of November 26, 2025, a big fire started at a group of tall apartment buildings called Wang F Court in Tai Po, Hong Kong. The fire began on the outside of the buildings while repair work was being done. It quickly spread to many of the towers.
This fire became one of the most serious fires in Hong Kong in recent years. Seven out of eight tall buildings were damaged. Firefighters worked for almost two days to stop the fire. Many people were hurt, and many lives were lost. Some people were also missing after the fire.
Why did the fire spread so fast, and why was it hard to escape?
One reason the fire spread quickly was because the buildings were covered with metal frames and safety netting during repairs. Some of these materials could catch fire easily, so the flames moved faster up the buildings.
Another big problem was smoke. Smoke can fill stairs and hallways very quickly. It makes it hard to see and hard to breathe. When people cannot see where to go, it is much harder to get out safely.
Knowing what to do during a fire can help keep people safe. This includes knowing where the nearest exit is, staying low to avoid smoke, and listening to firefighters. Practising fire drills and keeping escape paths clear help people know what to do before a fire happens.
Why do you think practising fire safety before an emergency can help people stay safer during a fire?
