How Meteorologists Use Weather Balloons to Predict Tomorrow's Forecast
Imagine releasing a balloon that travels higher than airplanes fly. That's exactly what meteorologists do twice every day at weather stations around the world. These special weather balloons, called radiosondes, float up through the clouds and into the stratosphere, gathering clues about what the weather will be like tomorrow.
Each weather balloon is filled with helium or hydrogen gas and carries a small box of instruments. As the balloon rises, these instruments measure temperature, humidity, air pressure, and wind speed at different heights. The box sends this information back to computers on the ground using radio signals, kind of like how a walkie-talkie works.
The balloon keeps climbing higher and higher, sometimes reaching heights of 100,000 feet or more. That's about 19 miles up in the sky. As it rises, the air gets thinner and the balloon expands like a growing bubble. Eventually it pops, and a small parachute helps the instrument box float safely back to Earth.
Why do meteorologists need information from so high up? Weather doesn't just happen at ground level. Storms form when warm and cool air meet at different heights. Wind patterns high in the atmosphere push weather systems across the country. By knowing what's happening way up in the sky, scientists can predict if tomorrow will bring sunshine, rain, or snow.
All around the world, weather stations launch these balloons at the same times each day, usually at midnight and noon. Scientists share the information they collect, creating a giant picture of Earth's atmosphere. This teamwork helps meteorologists make the weather forecasts you see on TV and your phone, keeping everyone prepared for whatever wild skies might come their way.
