    If you've ever watched a hockey game, you've seen that small black disk zooming across the ice at lightning speed. But here's a cool secret: before the game even starts, those pucks have been sitting in a freezer!

    Hockey pucks are made of vulcanized rubber, which is a special kind of rubber that's been treated with heat to make it super tough. At room temperature, this rubber can be a bit bouncy and sticky. That might sound fun, but it's actually a problem during a fast-paced hockey game.

    When pucks get frozen to about 20 degrees below zero, something amazing happens. The cold makes the rubber harder and less bouncy. A frozen puck slides smoothly across the ice instead of hopping and flipping around unpredictably. This means players can pass and shoot more accurately.

    Freezing pucks also helps them move faster because there's less friction between the cold puck and the cold ice. Plus, a frozen puck is less likely to stick to players' sticks or wobble in the air when it's flying toward the goal.

    Before each NHL game, about a dozen pucks are kept frozen and ready to go. If one flies into the crowd or gets too warm during play, the referees simply swap it out for a fresh frozen one. It's just one of the many behind-the-scenes details that make hockey the exciting sport we love to watch!
