    Next time you are stopped at a red light, look around. You might notice something interesting. Many traffic lights have special sensors that help them know when cars are waiting.

    Some traffic lights use timers that follow a schedule. Engineers figure out how long each light should stay red, yellow, or green based on how busy the road usually gets. These lights change the same way every time, like a clock ticking through the day.

    Other traffic lights are smarter. They use sensors buried under the road or cameras mounted on poles. When a car drives over the sensor or appears on camera, the traffic light gets a signal. The light knows a car is waiting and can decide to change sooner.

    At really busy intersections, computers control the lights. These computers talk to all the sensors and try to keep traffic moving smoothly. They might keep a green light on longer if lots of cars are coming from one direction.

    Some newer traffic lights can even detect emergency vehicles like fire trucks and ambulances. When they sense a siren, they can turn green faster to let the emergency vehicle through. That is pretty clever for a simple looking light on a pole!
