How Hummingbirds Hover in Mid-Air and Fly Backwards
Hummingbirds are some of the most amazing fliers in the animal kingdom. While most birds can only fly forward, hummingbirds can hover perfectly still in one spot, fly backwards, and even fly upside down for short distances. But how do these tiny birds perform such incredible tricks?
The secret is in their wings. Hummingbird wings are built differently from other birds. They can rotate their wings in a full circle at the shoulder, almost like a helicopter rotor. When hovering, a hummingbird moves its wings forward and backward in a figure-eight pattern instead of just up and down. This creates lift on both the forward and backward strokes.
Hummingbirds also beat their wings incredibly fast. Depending on the species, their wings flap between 50 and 80 times per second. That's so fast that all we see is a blur, and it creates the humming sound that gives them their name. All this flapping takes enormous energy, which is why hummingbirds need to eat almost constantly throughout the day.
To fly backwards, hummingbirds simply tilt their bodies and adjust the angle of their wings. They can control each wing independently, giving them precise control over their movement. This helps them back away from flowers after sipping nectar, or escape from danger quickly.
